We name the materials we use plainly, so you know what you are buying and how it will change over time.
Solid walnut and oak
We use solid American black walnut and solid oak, finished in hard wax oil. Walnut is a deep brown that can lighten slightly in sunlight. Oak is paler and shows a clear, open grain. Both are solid timber, not veneer, so each piece has its own grain pattern.
Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it afterwards. Keep away from direct heat and standing water. A hard wax oil finish can be refreshed with more oil if it dries out over time.
Bamboo
Bamboo is a fast growing grass, not a hardwood. It is hard wearing and pale in colour, and it darkens a little with age and light. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry it. Avoid soaking it in water.
Solid brass
Solid brass is a metal that patinates. Its bright finish will dull and darken over months of handling and air exposure. This is normal ageing, not a fault. Polish it with a brass cloth to keep the bright finish, or leave it to darken naturally.
Powder coated steel
We use powder coated steel in black or warm white. The coating resists scratches and marks better than ordinary paint. Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which can dull the coating.
Brushed aluminium
Brushed aluminium has a fine grain finish and is light for its strength. It can pick up fine marks with everyday use. Wipe with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive pads.
Recycled felt
Our recycled felt is made from reclaimed fibres pressed into a firm mat. It softens slightly with use and can mark if it gets wet. Spot clean with a dry or lightly damp cloth, then leave it to dry flat.
Wool felt
Wool felt is made from natural wool fibres. It is soft underfoot for a mouse or keyboard and resists marks well. Spot clean with a dry cloth and keep it away from prolonged damp.
Full grain leather
Full grain leather is a natural hide that marks and darkens with use. Scuffs, creases and colour change over time are part of how leather ages, not a fault. Wipe with a dry cloth and keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight and standing liquids.
Vegan leather
Vegan leather is polyurethane, a synthetic material made to look and feel like leather. It does not mark or darken the way real leather does. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Cork
Cork is a natural material with a light, flecked texture. It is soft underfoot and resists spills reasonably well. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it. Avoid soaking.
Rubber
Rubber gives a firm, grippy base and is easy to keep clean. Wipe with a damp cloth. Keep it away from direct heat, which can cause it to soften or warp.
Linen
Linen is a natural woven fabric with a slightly textured surface. It can crease and will show wear with heavy use over time. Spot clean and allow it to air dry.
Matte ceramic
Matte ceramic has a smooth, chalky surface and is heavier than plastic. It is hard wearing but can chip if dropped on a hard floor. Wipe with a damp cloth.
Cast concrete
Cast concrete is heavy and solid, with a slightly variable, natural surface. Small variations in colour and texture between pieces are normal, not a fault. Wipe with a damp cloth. It can mark if left in contact with coloured liquids for a long time.
